What materials do not require mortar for construction?

How to Build a Mortar less Wall? What materials can be used to build without mortar? To answer these questions, stay with us.

Upon seeing the title “Building a Wall Without Mortar,” you might think that such a thing does not exist and that it’s impossible to build a wall without using mortar. However, we must tell you that in today’s advanced world, anything is possible! In the construction industry, bricks and blocks have emerged in recent years that do not require mortar or require much less mortar for construction. In this article, we will examine these materials.

Types of Mortar Less Materials

First of all, we need to know that bricks and blocks that can be used in construction without mortar must have interlocking properties. That is, if no mortar is poured between them for connection, the materials themselves must interlock. To interlock bricks or blocks, they must have protrusions and indentations on them that fit together complementarily. The materials we want to introduce in this article for building mortar less walls are:

Interlocking Bricks and Blocks

One of the most commonly used materials in construction that does not require mortar for building walls is Interlocking bricks and blocks. Interlocking bricks have two cavities on them, with male and female parts on the top and bottom surfaces of the cavities, allowing builders to interlock the materials together to construct walls. However, a special adhesive for Interlocking bricks should be used between the courses of the wall to firmly and securely connect the bricks to each other.

Building a Wall with Interlocking Bricks

Building a wall with interlocking bricks is a very simple task and does not require skilled labor. Initially, as with other buildings, you should perform foundation laying and horizontal reinforcement according to the standard principles. However, instead of vertical reinforcements, three rebars are placed in the four corners of the building. Then, one rebar is placed for every meter of wall, which ensures the structural integrity of the building. When assembling the wall with interlocking bricks, the bricks are passed through the rebar, and a layer of adhesive is placed between each row of the wall. Once the wall you’ve built reaches a height of one meter, it’s time to arrange the blade bricks. The rebars are placed horizontally on them and connected to the vertical rebars with staples. To increase the strength of the interlocking wall, mortar is poured into the cavities. In the cavities without rebar, a disposable cup is placed first, and then mortar is poured into the cavities with rebar. Mortar is also applied on the grooved bricks, and the wall construction continues. Interlocking bricks are classified as mortar less materials because the amount of mortar used is very minimal and does not affect the appearance of the wall.

Interlocking Blocks

Another type of block with interlocking properties that can be used for temporary construction projects without mortar is the interlocking block. The protrusions and indentations of interlocking blocks are located on their side surfaces. This allows them to interlock with each other and create a smooth surface in construction. Therefore, there is no need for mortar or rebar placement, and only for making the structure more resistant, rebar and mortar can be used.

Applications  of Interlocking Blocks

As mentioned, interlocking blocks are mostly used in the construction of temporary structures.

  • Temporary underwater structures such as bridges and dams
  • Coastal areas to prevent water ingress
  • …..

Why use mortar less materials?

You might wonder why we should use materials in wall construction that do not require mortar.

  • Cost Reduction:

The first and most important reason for this is cost reduction. When you use bricks or blocks that do not require mortar for construction, you eliminate the cost of purchasing and transporting mortar. Additionally, if you use interlocking bricks, your constructed wall will be single-rowed, requiring fewer bricks and consequently lowering costs.

  • Preserving the Aesthetic Appearance of the Structure:

Some builders prefer to create a simple and classic façade for their building with bricks, rather than using expensive claddings. However, the mortar and cement used between the bricks can detract from the brick wall’s aesthetic appearance. Therefore, if you use materials that allow you to construct a wall without mortar, the aesthetic beauty of the structure is preserved.

  • Easier Passage for Utilities:

Interlocking blocks have holes that allow for the easy passage of utilities. Therefore, there is no need to demolish a part of the wall for electrical wiring or plumbing.
